THE TERRIBLE BEAUTY OF PARIAH

The Terrible Beauty of Pariah is a deeply evocative solo exhibition reflecting on the lasting legacy of nationalism, displacement, and identity reshaped in the wake of the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s. It is a deeply personal, immersive exhibition exploring identity, displacement, and belonging, rooted in my own lived experience of the Yugoslav wars and migration.

This exhibition explores what it means to live between “then” and “now”, between physical worlds and imagined ones and how fractured identities find meaning in loss, memory, and rebirth. Drawing inspiration from Jean-Paul Sartre’s Being and Nothingness, the exhibition questions how identity persists when belonging dissolves, and what remains when history rewrites itself. Through a powerful blend of short film, art installations, textile works, photography, ceramics, illustration, and poetry,The Terrible Beauty of Pariah opens a dialogue between the personal and the political, the past and the present. Each piece carries echoes of exile, migration, and transformation stories of four million people who fled their homes seeking new identities after the collapse of Yugoslavia.

Rather than retelling history chronologically, this exhibition reinterprets the spirit of socialist Yugoslavia its structure, character, and enduring influence — through the lens of spiritual and cultural metamorphosis. It confronts the sanitised versions of history with intimate, lived experiences, re-examining the possibility of collective memory in nations that no longer exist. It is both a memorial and an act of renewal: a space where stories of loss transform into collective reflection and dialogue about who we are, where we belong, and how identity continues to evolve in the shifting landscape of todays world.
