ICONICUS ANIMARUM

Any conversation around Byzantium, music and art should take its reference some of the strands that in collaboration with visual artist Nelson Ferreira and myself, we're pulled together in 'Iconicus Animarum'. “ The Image of Souls” Art as the language of the soul, translating the ineffable inner life into visible, symbolic, or aesthetic form. In this exhibition we introduced contemporary ways of thinking about iconography to the London public - teasing out the contrasts between it's past and present and looking at the future of its expression in art.

The show has been worked in partnership with Whitechapel Gallery for every “First Thirsday Show” and was held in Spitafields Studios part of SAFE Studios, an organisation set up to foster arts creation and interaction within the local community of Spitalfields and Whitechapel in Tower Hamlets.

Nelson Ferreira have displayed original iconography artifacts and show the power of Byzantine icons in their origins, symbolism and stories. Contemporary materials were mixed with historic cast metal objects, ivories and engraved gems. My approach explored iconographic elements within a modernist surrealist expression, emphasising the absurdity of human nature.The exhibition was a powerful cocktail of art installation, music, and paintings elicited inspiration from the atmosphere of Pushkin's poems. which I presented in the form of a visual short film and a illustrative painting. named: “Aquauilibrium Happens Here” emphasising on historical diversity off political / religious views.

The central element of this exhibition was tracing the opposites in classical vs contemporary and charting the stylistic development of sacred art from the centre of Greek Christianity to its introduction to Russia; centering on the ways in which artistic images both reveal and conceal the soul. “Iconicus Animarum - to make visible essence of the human spirit. “
